Polar Express Party Tomorrow!

Thanks to everyone who donated and/or volunteered for our Polar Express Party tomorrow. It should be lots of fun. Students can wear their pyjamas all day. They should have shoes and jackets, etc to go out for recess though. They can wear slippers in the classroom or just shoes.
The actual party begins around 1:00pm. We will start with the Polar Express book, then have our hot chocolate and snacks and then finish with a secret video.

Friday is a dress up day. Students can wear clothes with Christmas colours. If they do so, the school is asking for a donation of a loonie or toonie for charity.

Friday is the last day of school until after Christmas Vacation and it is an early dismissal at 12:15pm.

Tale of the Tape

Congratulations to all the Grade 2 class for winning the Tale of the Tape. I know the Grade Two's were very excited to hear that they won. And my hearing is almost all the way back now from their Thank you to all the families who helped donate food. Not only does this make for an exciting day for our class, but it helps families in need. We will have our pizza party in January. I'm planning it for Tuesday, January 19th. If you see this before ordering hot lunch, you do not need to order it on that day. As some orders have already come in, we could ask the coordinators if we can switch. Let me know if you need to change the date. I hope they are accommodating.

Tomorrow is the Choir performance at Aberdeen. For those who are in choir and have hot lunch, most likely they will get it delivered in time, but there is a chance that it is late so students might want to bring something as a backup just in case.

Friday is the Dress Rehearsal for the Christmas Concert. Students should come to school dressed in their costume, but bring their uniform to change into later. They also need a bag to keep their costume in so that we will have it for Monday. It will stay at school over the weekend.

Thank you to everyone who signed up to bring something in for our Polar Express Party. We seem to have enough right now. It's looking like it will be great. I hope many of you are able to join us.

Polar Express

In December, the Grade Two class will have our annual Polar Express Celebration. The date will be Wednesday, December 16th.

We get to wear our pajamas to school all day on Tuesday just like the little boy in the story. The children can also wear their bathrobes and slippers as long as they have outdoor shoes and jackets for recess and lunch time.

You are all welcome to join us. We will need a few volunteers to help make the hot chocolate and organize the goodies while I am reading the story.

We would also appreciate it if anyone could contribute one item to our celebration. We need hot chocolate, marshmallows, whipping cream, candy canes, cups, paper plates and other goodies. We will have a sign up sheet just below. Please email me and I will update it so we will know what we still need. Thank you.

We will start shortly after 1:00 with a reading of the book and then we will have the hot chocolate and goodies. About 2:15 we will watch a "secret" video that I know the children will love and the theme is very similar to the magic of the Polar Express.

Every day this week, Grade 7s will be bringing around poppies. If a student would like to donate $1 or more, they are welcome to bring in their money and get a poppy.

I hope everyone had a safe and happy Halloween!

Tomorrow, the school is collecting leftover candy for the Agape ministries. Students can bring in any excess candy and donate it.

We have a fairly regular week. P.E. will be Monday, Thursday and Friday. Children should have their P.E. strip on those days and already on beneath their uniform.

Tomorrow we will be sending home a letter from Fr. Justin. Here it is as a preview:

Dear Parents,

I hope you're well!

I wish to inform you that we will be moving First Communion to a weekend Mass, specifically, Saturday, May 14 at 5 p.m.

This is done for one important theological and pastoral reason. Since receiving Communion includes becoming one with Jesus and His Church, it should be done in the context of the greater parish family community. Many priests have found that doing special Masses for baptisms, the Eucharist and Confirmation, have emphasized that it's a 'private' event where only family and friends are invited. This has in turn led to a gap between those receiving the sacraments and the parish family. To improve this connection, we will start celebrating these sacramental moments in the context of the parish family community.

I hope and pray that this makes sense and doesn't cause you any inconvenience. I also hope that all of us realize that our children receiving First Communion don’t just positively affect them and you, but all of us, praise God!

If you have any questions, please let me know.
Thank you! God bless!
Fr. Justin

Field Trip and Halloween!

Thank you to everyone who was able to attend the Parent-Teacher Conference. It was a long day, but a very rewarding day.

Our Spelling test from last week's words will take place Monday. There will be no Spelling or homework (Besides our main homework - READ, READ READ) this week as a break for the children during Halloween.

Wednesday is our field trip to the pumpkin patch. As of today, the weather report is predicting rain so students should dress in warm and comfortable clothes, boots as the pumpkin patch can get very muddy, and rain jackets. The bus will leave around 9:00 so please don't be late. We should have enough space on the bus for parents who are joining us, but you can drive to the pumpkin patch on your own. There is lots of parking.

The Walkathon prize, Teacher for a Day will take place tomorrow. Maegan is our teacher tomorrow. Congratulations Maegan!

Parent Teacher Conferences

Parent Teacher Conference notices went home last Friday. If you have not already handed them in, please do so by tomorrow. We've had a lot of requests for specific times. We will do our best to fulfill as many as we can, but as we have a rather large class, slots are limited.

This Friday is a dress up day. Inspirational Hero day. If your child dresses up, the school is asking for a small donation of $1 or $2 that goes to charity.

Next Tuesday, we will have a test in Math based on Unit 1. It will be very much like the work they did in class on extending patterns, letter patterns and repeating patterns.

We have a lost jacket. Here is a description:
light grey cotton hoodie jacket. It's brand is H&M, size 7-8 years. There is a yellow strap in between hoodie and neck area inside of jacket.

If anyone has seen it, please let me know.

If you ordered photos, they went home today and retakes were today as well.

Walkathon Week

Cross Country is tomorrow for everyone who joined. Students can come to school as normal. They should dress in their P.E. strip, but have warm and dry clothes for sitting in the stands. Maybe extra socks and shoes if it's really wet. They need a lunch and snack and a water bottle. We should be back by 3:15 to 3:30pm. The Grade Two's will be the first runners from about 10:30 to 10:45.

Homework will be sent home tomorrow and is due Tuesday for credit.

Friday is our Walkathon. Students once again should be in P.E. strip, but also dressed for the weather. No umbrellas are allowed for safety reasons. Waterproof jackets would be great if it is raining that day. We have Mass in the morning and then go on our walk. When we get back, students will be given a hot dog and drink or snack. Dismissal is at 12:15pm.

Monday is a holiday so we will see everyone back on Tuesday.

Our first field trip will take place Wednesday, October 28th. More information will be sent home shortly.

Terry Fox Run

Tomorrow is our annual Terry Fox Run for charity. Students should come to school in P.E. strip. They are allowed to stay in it all day, however if the weather is bad, they can change back to regular uniform if they wish.

For those in Cross Country, next week is the championship at Swangard stadium. The bus will leave around 9:15am from school. Students should be prepared for the weather. If it's raining, they will need to keep warm and dry when not running. Parents are welcome to come. We should have lots of room on the bus. You can pick your child up at the end of the day at the stadium, otherwise we will be arriving back at school around 3:30 or so.

Next Friday, October 9th is the Walkathon. If you have not done so, please return the permission form. More information will be sent in the next week.

This Week

I asked the children to find out which size of T-shirt would be best as Walkathon shirts will be ordered soon.

Spelling Words are up on the Spelling page. Homework will be sent home tomorrow.

This Friday is a Dress Up Day. It is Multicultural Day where they can wear something that celebrates their culture or any culture really. If children dress up on that day, we are asking for a loonie or a toonie donation toward Grade 7 graduation.

Next Monday is the Emergency Evacuation Practice. More information can be found on the school website. It will very similar to last year.

Next Wednesday, September 30th is the Terry Fox run. Students can come to school in their P.E. uniform if the weather isn't too bad/cold. We will be running around Triangle Park.

Reminder about P.E. Students need to have their P.E. uniform underneath their regular uniform so that they can change in the classroom and quickly. P.E. is Monday, Thursday and Friday.

Hot lunches are now here. Even if your child has a hot lunch, they still need a snack.

Scholastic Orders

SCHOLASTIC BOOK CLUBS

The best gift any parent can give a child is the love of good books and the joy and benefits of good reading. Children who read at home, or are read to, have a head start on reading success in school.

Our class is participating in Scholastic Lucky, See-Saw Book and special clubs this year. Each month during the school year I will send home a Club flyer with a different selection of books offered. You’ll find award-winning books, as well as old and new favourites. I recommend them because the books span a wide range of children’s reading levels and interests and because they are inexpensive (some books cost only $2).

It is easy to order. This month’s flyer was sent home today and will be due on Sept. 29th. Just look over the flyer with your child, select the books you want, mark them on the order form on the back of the flyer(under the BC section), and return the order form to me with payment in cash or a cheque payable to Scholastic Canada Ltd. The books will arrive in about two weeks after I send the class order to Scholastic. Also, cheques may be post-dated to the due date, as I will not be mailing them out until after that date. Even if you order from different books clubs, you only need to send one cheque as every club is Scholastic.

Scholastic had introduced an option to pay with your own credit card this year. Information on how to do this went home as well today. If you have any questions, please feel free to pop into the classroom or send me a message.

Owning your own books is something special! I hope that you will encourage your child to order books this year. Each order helps earn free books and teaching materials for our classroom, however there is never any obligation to order. I know of no better way to encourage reading than to allow children to choose the books they want to read. Another tip is to select books from the flyers and visit the public library to look for these books.

PS: For more information about the books in this offer, you can visit the Scholastic Book Clubs Web site at http://www.scholastic.ca/clubs to see press reviews and view inside pages. You will also find great activities and resources for you and your child.

Primary choir forms went home today as well. The choir teachers are asking for them back by Friday, but as space is limited, I would recommend handing it in as soon as you can.

Week 2

We have our first full week this week.

Tomorrow is Photo Day. It will be individuals.

For those of you signed up for Cross Country, our first practice is tomorrow 7:45am at Oak Park. We will run even if it's raining a little. However, if it's a downpour we may cancel it there. If you feel it's coming down too hard, you can stay home. I will be there 7:45 no matter what and we'll see how it goes. We want to get in as many practices as we can since it's a short season.

Grade Two's had the Spelling pre-test today. Normally, we write it in our agendas, but the school has yet to receive them.
This week's Spelling list is up on the Spelling page. On the right side of this page.

Reminder that P.E. is Monday, Thursday and Friday.

Meet the Teacher

Meet the Teacher will start at 7:00pm tonight (Thursday, September 10th)  in the Church Basement. After a brief introduction, parents can attend the sessions in the classrooms. I will talk about what Grade Two is about, my expectations, routines, etc

The P.E. schedule can be found under classroom information.

If you have not yet brought in all supplies, please have them at school by Monday.

Sunday, August 30, 2015

Welcome to Grade 2 2015/2016!

We will be using this blog to help all our parents with reminders, dates and upcoming events, etc.
As school will be starting in just over a week, I'd like to give out a few reminders for those of you who might happen to see this before school starts.

If you look on the right side, you will see some links: Class information, Spelling, First Communion etc. Class information has some information about this class and the school supplies. I'm also posting the school supplies list below for anyone who needs it. If you have ordered the Edupacks, they have arrived at the school and will be sent home the first day so that your children's name can be written on their supplies. This will make it more difficult for the children to lose items as we will know the owner. For those of you buying your own supplies, please check below to make sure you have every thing and it's the right size. Our pencil boxes will all stack together so if someone has a pencil box that is not the correct size, it will not stack with the others. All writing in Grade 2 is still done with interlined pages. It really helps the children's writing and neatness and prepares them for Grade 3. An example is below.

2 Plastic Pencil Box 8.5" x 2.5" x 5"
1 Reclosable Bag 12" x 15" (A very large ziplock bag)
5 duotangs (White, Dark Blue, Green, Purple, Red)
1 Twin Pocket Portfolio (Yellow)
1 Metric Ruler (Clear)
4 Interlined 72 Pg Exercise Books 9" x 7"
4 1/2 Plain 1/2 Interlined 72 Pg Exercise Books 9" x 7"
2 Plain 72 Pg Exercise Books 9" x 7"2 Tri-Write Ticonderoga Pencils 2 HB Box of 12

As you know, School begins Tueday, September 8th at 8:45am and dismisses at 12:15pm.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. You can always email me by using the contact form on the right side or clicking my profile to send an email.

Let's have a great year!

Year in Review

Dear Parents.

I hope you all have a great Summer! I'd like to thank all of you for everything you did for me, our school and of course our children.

I made an end of the year slideshow that I showed the children today and I wanted to pass it along to you. It has a lot of our good memories of Grade Two.

This video might only play on a computer or laptop. I'm not sure if it will work on a phone or tablet. It includes sound.

The video below hopefully will play on a phone or tablet. There is no sound.

Final Day

Dear Parents,
I wanted to thank everyone who was able to contribute toward our Good Shepherd Celebration today. The food was tremendous and the students were able to eat so many different kinds of things. I don't know how many will be able to eat dinner tonight. :)

I'd also like to thank everyone for the birthday cake and wishes. As well as the present. It was so generous. Very thoughtful.

Tomorrow is the last day of school. School will end at 12:15pm. report cards will be going home at the end of the day as well. If anyone is sick and unable to pick up the report card, they will be in the office for the next week. We have Mass and Assembly tomorrow. All parents are welcome to join the school.

I will have one more post tomorrow. I think it will be something fun to end the year.

Good Shepherd Celebration

Our Good Shepherd Celebration takes place tomorrow from about 12:30pm. Thanks again to all parents who were able to contribute toward the potluck lunch.
Students do not need to bring a lunch tomorrow as we will have all that wonderful food and drink.
They still need a snack in the morning.

With only 2 days left, we have lots to bring home. We've been bringing a few things every day and a few more things tomorrow. On Friday, if students could bring a few bags. Just shopping bags would be fine. I know some classes ask for garbage bags, but I don't think we have that much stuff.

Last Week!

Dear Parents,

We have a busy week this last week of school.

Tomorrow (Monday) we have our 50 word Spelling Test. It was scheduled for last Friday, but with the Talent Show and Father's Day card, we had to move it to this Monday.
There is also the Award Ceremony tomorrow. I believe at 9:30. All parents are welcome to join us. Most awards are for Grade 7's and intermediates, but I believe there are choir awards for some of us.

Wednesday, June 24th is Early Dismissal. School will end at 12:15pm.

Thursday is our Good Shepherd Celebration. It will begin around 12:30ish. Thanks again to everyone who has signed up to bring food. If we all come together, it should be a fantastic way to end the year. I hope many of you are able to join us.

Friday is the last day of school. It will be a busy day. We have Mass and then a end of the year Assembly and then try to pack up everything that goes home. Dismissal will be at 12:15pm.

It's been a great year. Hard to believe it's almost at an end, but let's enjoy our last week.

Last 2 weeks

Thank you to all the parents who were able to join our class on the field trip today.

We have a Math test this Thursday. It's just a review of Unit 5 which is addition and subtraction to 100.

The talent show is this Friday at 1:00pm. All parents are welcome to attend. I don't yet know the participants, but I assume that information will be posted very soon.

Next Monday, we will be having our Awards Assembly. More information will be sent home soon.

Reminder that next Wednesday is early dismissal. School will end at 12:15pm. Thursday is a regular day and Friday is the last day of school and will finish at 12:15pm as well.

Thursday is our Good Shepherd Celebration. Thank you to everyone who has already signed up to bring food to our potluck. We are lucky to have so many items already. If you have not yet signed up to bring something, please contract myself or Jane's Mom. All parents and family are invited to join us for our special celebration.

Field Trip

Permission Forms for our Field Trip will go home tomorrow. We've been waiting for bus confirmation. Unfortunately, last Friday, the office told me that while we have a bus, it is only medium size as a larger bus was above our budget. We might not have room for parents on the bus. If any parents are able to drive themselves and other parents, we can try to arrange a car pool to help those that want to go, but have no way to get there. If you are able to drive or need a ride, please let me know. You are welcome to arrange rides on your own too, but please let me know when you fill our the permission form or in email so I know who is coming. Thank you for your patience.

This Friday is our Pizza Party. Students do not need a lunch that day, but they will still need their snack.

Tuesday, June 2, 2015

June!

Sports Day - This Friday, June 5th is Sports Day. Students can wear clothes of their team colour and ready for physical activities outside. The weather is looking like it will be pretty warm and sunny. Students might want sunscreen and/or hats. School will end at 12:15pm on this day.

Monday, June 8th is the teacher planning day. No school for students.

I'm hoping to have the permission forms for our field trip to Boundary Bay Regional Park sent home. I'm just waiting for confirmation on the bus and the size of the bus. Parents are welcome to join us. If we have a big bus, there will be lots of seats to accommodate everyone. If the bus is smaller, seating may be limited.

We have dates for all our June, July and August Birthdays! We will celebrate all in June:

June 15th  - Yzabella
June 17th - Kris
June 18th - Caitlin
June 19th - Audrey
June 22nd - Ana Sofia
June 23rd - Nathan

June is Coming!

We have only 5 weeks left in the school year. However, we have a lot of activities and things to do in the last 5 weeks.

Hot lunch forms went home today. We have a few days where the students might not want to order hot lunch so I will go over these now.

The Grade 2 class won a pizza party for their contributions towards the Money in the Bag donation drive. We will have this pizza party on Friday, June 12th.

Tuesday, June 16th will be our last field trip. We are going to Boundary Bay Regional Park from around 10:00 am to 2 or 2:30 pm. More information will be given. We are just waiting for bus confirmation at this point. We will be taking bagged lunches with us to have a picnic at the beach.

Students may have mentioned the Good Shepherd Celebration. We are blessed that Father Justin can join us. We will celebrate this event on Thursday, June 25th. The day before the last day of school. It will be a special prayer service led by the Grade Two class and Father Justin in our classroom. After, we will have a potluck lunch. We are hoping many parents can join us for our special year end celebration.

Next Friday, June 5th is Fun Day or Sports Day. By now students should know their team colour. On that day they should try to wear clothes that match as best as they can. We will have some meetings so the students will know more after tomorrow.

All children who have birthdays in July and August will celebrate their birthday in June. Exact dates will be posted later.

Tuesday

The Grade Two's had a great Living Rosary today. We didn't have as much time to practice as some years because of the holiday on Friday and Monday, but every one did a great job. I think this was the best I've seen from Grade Two doing the Living Rosary. Thank you to all parents who could come and join us.

There is no Spelling this week because of the short week and the Living Rosary today.

Friday is dress up day. My future career. Please bring a loonie or toonie if they choose to dress up. It will be interesting to see all the types of jobs and careers that the children are thinking about. If they want to dress up as a teacher, please remind them that they need the same hair as me. I can give out free hair cuts. (^_^)

Victoria Day Week

Living Rosary is this Tuesday at 9:15am. All parents are welcome to attend. Every student has a part which they should be practicing this weekend. It will either be the Hail Mary or Glory Be.

Hail Mary full of Grace, the Lord is with thee.
Blessed are thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus.

Holy Mary Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death
Amen.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Our First Communion Bulletin Board is now up in the hall by the office/Staff Room. Thank you  to everyone who sent in pictures. Any pictures sent after last weekend will be posted this Tuesday.

Short Week

This Friday, May 15th is a day off school. We are celebrating the feast day of St. Anthony of Padua. Monday the 18th is Victoria Day so it is a 4-day weekend. I hope everyone has a good little rest.

The Living Rosary has been delayed. It will now take place on Tuesday, May 19th at 9:15am. The Grade 7's are having the sacrament of Confirmation on Wednesday and the school wants the extra time on Tuesday to practice a few things for that Mass.

Thank you to everyone who sent in photos for First Communion. We should have the bulletin board up by Tuesday. If you still wish to send some photos in, I can accept them until midnight tonight (Sunday).

Scholastic orders for May will be due May 19th.

First Communion and Mother's Day Mass

I wanted to give a big congratulations to all the First Communicants. Everyone did a great job. It's always fun to see all the children dressed up. As I told the children, it's also the only time they will see me in a tie. We will be putting up a bulletin board soon, but I need some help. During First Communion, I am too busy to take pictures, so I need pictures to put up on our bulletin board. If you have some good pictures, please send them to me at my email nchatton@stanthonyofpaduaschool.ca
Pictures of the children, families etc would all be great.
As soon as I have enough, I can print them out and make our
First Communion Bulletin board.

The Mother's Day Mass takes place this Wednesday. All Mother's are invited. Father are invited too, but I don't think they will get any flowers. It will start at the usual time of 9:15am in the Church. There is a tea after the Mass down in the Church Basement.

This Friday is a Dress Up Day. The Theme this week is Spring
Colours. Please bring a loonie or toonie for charity/Grade 7 Graduation on that day.

Congratulations to our class for winning the Money in the Bag. Thank you to all students and parents for their generous donations of clothing. The Grade 2 class will receive a pizza party. I don't have a date yet, but I'm thinking of some time in June. That way we can set a date and let everyone know before hot lunch orders so we don't waste any money.

Next Tuesday, May 12th, the Grade 2 class will help lead the school in a Living Rosary Assembly. All parents are invited to attend. It will probably start around 9:15, but I will let you know when we have a confirmed time.

Fine Arts

The Grade Two's had a very successful Fine Arts concert. If you were unable to attend, I'm posting a video of the performance below.

A few reminders over the long weekend. No school Monday.

April 28th is class photo day. Students should make sure to be in full uniform.

April 28th is also the First Communion Rehearsal at 6:00pm in the Church. Father Justin gave me a letter to hand out today, but it slipped my mind so I'm posting it here and will hand out on Tuesday.

April 20th

We have a few upcoming events in the next few weeks.

This Thursday is Jeans Day Dress Up. Children are encouraged to wear jeans. Any tops are OK. Please bring a loonie or toonie for BC Children's hospital.

Friday is the Fine Arts Day. We have a time. It has changed again. It will start at 9:30am in the Scottish Cultural Centre. You might want to arrive a few minutes early to get a better seat. If the time changes again, I will post it here.

Next Monday, April 27th is a Pro-D Day. No school for students.

Scholastic orders will be due April 28th.

April 28th is also the date of the First Communion Dress Rehearsal. We will meet in the church at 6:00pm.

If you have not already done so, we would appreciate the $20 for the First Communion Reception to be handed in by the 28th as well.

Next Wednesday, April 29th is Money in the Bag. Notices went home today. We ask that the clothes only be brought to school on the 29th as our classroom is not big enough to hold extra clothes beyond forgotten uniforms.

Week of April 13th

We have a very normal week this week. No big events or special days. Regular schedule all week.
Library on Monday. Back to regular Spelling and Math homework this week.

I would like to put out a reminder that next Friday, April 24th is the Fine Arts Day. The Grade Two's are signing a song from Aladdin. When I know exactly what time it will start, I will post it here.

May 3rd is First Communion. As you probably remember from last year, Grade 1 parents set up the reception. We are requesting $20 from the families that will be experiencing the sacrament of First Communion to help pay for the reception.

April 7th on

I hope everybody had a great and blessed Easter. A few notices for this week.

Tomorrow is Speech Arts. Primary individuals will start around 9:00am. Class speech Arts will start around 1:00. I believe it will go in order from kindergarten on so we should be pretty early.

Friday is crazy hat or hair day. It is also the Seekers Social. It might start around 5:30. I will post more information this week.

As this week is only 4 days and Tuesday is filled up with Speech Arts, there will be no spelling this week. I'll send home some extra homework for those who want it.

Welcome Back from Spring Break. I hope everyone had a restful break.

This week and up to next Wednesday we have Gym Sense. Students should wear their P.E. strip every day up to April 1st.

There is no Mass this Wednesday.

This Friday is a dress up day. It will be wear something backwards.

We have normal Spelling and Math. From now, Spelling each week will have 3 bonus words.

Students should be practicing their poem every day at home. We will be practicing at school as well.
The school wide Speech Arts will take place on Tuesday, April 7th. It will start around 1:00pm on that day.
If anyone is interested in doing the individual Speech Arts, please let me know. Individual performances will take place in the morning. I put a link up on the right under pages with our poem, Bible Readings and guidelines for Speech Arts for those interested.

Please return the report card cover and envelope this week if you have not already done so. We need them for the 3rd report card.

Last Week before Spring Break

We have a busy last few days before Spring Break.

Friday, March 13th is the last day of school before Spring Break. School will dismiss early that day at 12:15pm. Report Cards will be going home at that time. It is also a dress up day. St. Patrick's colours. Please bring a $1 or $2 for charity/Grade 7 Grad.

This week is a little busy so there will be no Spelling test or homework this week. I will give a little bonus homework later in the week that the students can do over the break. Nothing too lengthy as their homework (beside reading, reading, reading) over the break should be mainly relaxing and playing.

Speech Arts is coming up in April. I will be sending home our poem in the next few days. I will also post it up here as well. We will practice it in class and the students should practice it at home as well in order to memorize it.

School opens again on Monday the 23rd at 8:45am. From this day, we will be having Gym Sense (Gymnastics). Students should wear their PE strip everyday again. It will last until Wednesday, April 1st.

I'm also asking for donations of tissue boxes. We've had many colds/running noses etc this year and are almost out of tissue. If you have any extra tissues boxes to donate to the class, we (myself and the students) would be very grateful. We go through it quickly.

Math Test delayed until Tuesday

I just learned on Friday that we will be having a Fire Drill in the morning on Monday. It would be right in the middle of the time in which I planned on having the Math Test. To avoid distractions, we will move the test to Tuesday.

Enrollment Mass and Math Assessment

First Communion Enrollment Mass is this Sunday at 11:30am at St. Anthony of Padua Church. The children will sit up at the front and parents can sit a few rows back. It's basically the same as the Reconciliation Enrollment Mass we had in January.  Students should wear their uniform if possible. It looks nice and distinguishes the children as belonging to our school community. I'd recommend arriving 10 minutes early in order to get a nice seat.

As mentioned before we will have a Math test next Monday. It is a review of Unit 3. It's designed more to look at strategies and how to do the questions than just throwing out addition and subtraction facts. It will cover:
Math Test Unit 3: Addition and Subtraction to 18

Recognize a number as odd or even up to 100.

Able to use different strategies such as using doubles, making 10, one more, one less, two more, two less, building on a known double, addition for subtraction
to determine basic addition facts to 18 and related subtraction facts.

equal and not equal
such as:

4 + 2 (equals/not equals) 8 - 2

5 + 7 (equals/not equals) 11

Word Problems for addition and subtraction up to 18.

Reminders: Twins Day Friday and Tennis for the remainder of the week. Spelling test as usual on Friday.

First Communion and Twins Day.

Just a quick reminder that the First Communion Meeting is tomorrow at 6:00pm in the Church Basement.

Tennis is every day this week so students should be wearing P.E. strip every day.

Twins Day is coming up on Friday. If your child dresses up, the school is asking for them to donate a $1 or 2. Twins day seems to be that they dress the same as someone else (or more).

Student Led Conference Tomorrow!

Student Led Conferences are tomorrow, Friday, February 20th. There is no school for students outside of their scheduled conference time. Each block is scheduled for about 30 minutes.
Your child will lead you around the classroom. When you enter the classroom, please pick up a handout and a pen on the table next to the door:
This handout has all the information you need and a list of things to do with your child. Of course, if you have any questions, I will be there to assist you.

A few notes for next week:
  1. Students should wear their P.E. strip everyday next week for Tennis.
  2. First Communion Meeting will take place at 6:00 on Tuesday, February 24th in the Church Basement. Father Justin is requesting parents only (one or both is fine).
  3. The First Communion Enrollment Mass will take place the following Sunday, March 1st. It will be in the church and begins at 11:30am.

Week of February 16th

Welcome back!

I hope everybody enjoy their week off. We're right back into school this week. It will be pretty busy.

Tomorrow (16th) is 100th Day and Dress Up Day. Students may dress up in Valentine colours. Whites, Reds, Pinks and Purples. If students dress up, they are asked to bring in a loonie or toonie. Monies will to Grade 7 Graduation this time.

If any students have been collecting 100 objects, they should bring them in for tomorrow.

Tuesday is Reconciliation at 6:00pm in the Church. Students should wear their uniform. They do not need to bring anything else. They have been practicing with their confession sheet. As I told the students, they do not need to memorize it as I will have a special copy that they can use. They do need to be familiar with all the words and what they mean.

Wednesday is Ash Wednesday. All parents are welcome to join our school for the Ash Wednesday Mass. It will be in the afternoon rather than the morning. It should start around 1:10.

Friday is Student Led Conferences. There will be no school that day. Students will come with their parents at their scheduled time. Students should wear their uniforms at that time.

Upcoming items

The Student Led Conference forms are completed. They will be sent home tomorrow. I tried to give every one the times they wanted, however, since there will be multiple families in one time slot, it's not always possible to accommodate exact times. Although we cannot schedule a Student Led Conference for another time, if you are unable to attend, we can arrange a time to have a meeting. I'm sure this goes without saying, but the students need to attend since they will be leading their parents during their time. Every time slot is scheduled for 30 minutes.

Reminder: This Friday is a normal school day. Next week is no school for all students.

February 16th is a Dress Up Day. The Theme is Valentine's Day. Students can wear Valentine colours. White, Red, Purple and Pink. All monies go for Grade 7 Graduation.

February 16th is also our 100th Day of school. If they wish, students can bring in 100 objects that they counted. It's just for fun, so they do not have to do this. The objects can be in a bag or jar, etc. Examples: 100 Lego pieces would be a good idea. 100 cats not that good.

Thank you to all parents who responded to our First Communion survey. The consensus seems to be to go with a simpler reception.

Reconciliation will take place February 17th. With the week off, it will come pretty quickly. I will send home a practice sheet for the students with examples of what they will say and the Act of Contrition. They do not need to memorize it, but they should be familiar with it.

Friday, January 30, 2015

Student Led Conference Forms went home today (Friday, January 30th). Please return them as soon as possible. Wednesday is the absolute last day as the school will complete all the schedules Wednesday afternoon. Forms with your time slot will be returned on Friday.

Have a good weekend!

Thursday, January 29, 2015

Tomorrow is Pyjamas Day at school. Students are asked to bring a loonie or toonie if they will wear their pyjamas. All monies will go to Team Finn.
